Ο Black έγινε διάσημος το 1987 με τα τραγούδια Sweetest Smile and Wonderful Life. Ομως η μουσική καριέρα του είχε ήδη ξεκινήσει από το 1981 με το σινγκλ Human Features. Από τότε ηχογράφησε οκτώ άλμπουμ ως Black και άλλα έξι με το πραγματικό όνομά του Colin Vearncombe.
Αρκετά ιδιόρρυθμος στην προσωπική ζωή του, ο Black ζούσε στο Κορκ της Ιρλανδίας στο ίδιο σπίτι με την πρώην γυναίκα του, τους τέσσερις γιους του και μια ομάδα ξένων φοιτητών, φίλων του.Στις 15 Ιανουαρίου 2016 ο Black τραυματίστηκε πολύ σοβαρά σε αυτοκινητιστικό ατύχημα στην Ιρλανδία και απεβίωσε σε ηλικία 53 ετών στις 26 Ιανουαρίου 2016 .
